Data we process

We process the data you provide: name and email address (account), your recorded books, notes, ratings and reading data, and – for paid plans – the information required for payment.

Purposes & legal bases

We use this data to provide the service (performance of contract, Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR), for billing, and to improve and secure the platform (legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Payments (Mollie)

Payments are handled by Mollie B.V. The data required for the payment is transmitted to Mollie; its own privacy policy applies in addition.

AI features (Anthropic)

For AI features (assistant, automatic descriptions, new release radar and recognising books in photos), the relevant inputs are sent to our AI provider Anthropic PBC (model “Claude”) to generate the response. For photo recognition this is the photo itself, so please photograph books only, not people. Only the content needed for the request is transmitted; Anthropic does not use it to train its models. You start photo recognition yourself; in the app only after your explicit consent.

iPhone and Android apps

The apps use the same account as the website. The camera is only used when you scan a barcode or photograph books; photos are sent for recognition and are not stored, unless you explicitly choose a photo as a cover. For the reading timer we store the start, duration and page count of your reading sessions to show you statistics. The lock screen display stays on your device. The apps use no tracking and no advertising. You can delete your account with all data at any time directly in the app (Profile → Delete account).

“Wat liest Lëtzebuerg?” and Luxembourg authors

For the public ranking “Wat liest Lëtzebuerg?” and the author pages, we count how many different people have read or are reading a book. Only title, author, cover and the number of readers are published; a book only appears in the ranking once three different people have read it. Names, profiles, ratings or notes are never shown. Information about Luxembourg authors comes from Wikidata (CC0) and our own curation.

Map, book exchanges and family library

The map loads map images from OpenStreetMap (tile.openstreetmap.org), which transmits your IP address to the OpenStreetMap Foundation. Place data comes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL). “Near me” uses your location only in the browser or app – it is not sent to us or stored. “Book left/taken” entries and reports of missing places are stored with your account; publicly only title, author and date appear, never your name. In a family library, the members you joined see title, author, cover, reading status and who a book is lent to – no notes, ratings or quotes. You can leave the family at any time.

Book metadata

To automatically complete book data and covers, requests may be sent to external services (e.g. Google Books).

Cookies & session

We use a technically necessary session cookie to keep you logged in and store your language preference. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.

Retention

We keep your data as long as your account exists. After account deletion, the associated data is removed, unless legal retention obligations apply (e.g. invoices).

Sharing

We do not share data with third parties except where required to perform the contract (e.g. payment processing) or where legally obliged.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. To exercise these, contact contact@virtualibrary.lu. You may also lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority – in Luxembourg, the CNPD (Commission nationale pour la protection des données).
